#1 Tips for Khusyu' in Solat

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatu,

After a thorough research, through my own personal experience, listen to lectures by our beloved Shuyukh, after discussing with friends, after I have given some thought to it deeply.

The most essential part in getting khusyu' is through HUMILITY.

Do we know what is the best way to be humility? Through the dictionary, the meaning of humility is the quality or condition of being humble.

Have you ever thought, when is it really we are being humble? I would list them as below of how would humility come to you in relation to human:
1) When you did something wrong to a person
2) When you knew that that person has more knowledge than you.
3) When the person give you something as a present.
4) When you have respect to this person.
5) When you heard about others act of good/humility and you were motivated by it and applied them.

1) We always do SINS to Him. Repentance is the best way to have khusyu'. Everytime after committing the sins, upon the next prayer, remind yourself of the sins and ask Allah for forgiveness in the Solat especially during Sujud. This video might help you in doing MUHASABAH upon yourself.

2) Allah is the Most Knowledgeable. He knows everything from the Earth to the Heavens and everything between it. He knows what you are thinking now in Solat and you still wants to hide from him? The Famous Ayatul Qursi:
"Allah — there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist. Slumber over-takes Him not, nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him but by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them. And they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He pleases. His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of them both tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Great." Surah Al-Baqarah: 2:255

3) Allah is the Most Merciful. It is clearly explained through the Hadith of Prophet SAW:
On the authority of Anas RA who said : I heard the Messenger of Allah SAW say : Allah the Almighty has said : O Son of Adam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O Son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O Son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the Earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it [too]. Hadith 42 in Imam's Nawawi 40 hadith collection. [Thimidhi]

4) Allah is the Most Gracious. Still giving you health, money and time even we sins everyday. Think about that during your prayer.

5) Allah is the only one that the believers have to fear too. And still, when we are standing to pray to Allah, not a bit of fear enters our heart.

What other reasons that we want to present to Allah on the Judgement Day when we were asked, "Why are you not concentrate in the solat?". Is there any reasons after knowing that how much we are not being humble to Allah? How dare we become LAZY and not concentrate when we are in the midst of meeting Allah yakni the Solat. When we are communicating directly to Allah.

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:238,
﴿حَـفِظُواْ عَلَى الصَّلَوَتِ والصَّلَوةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُواْ لِلَّهِ قَـنِتِينَ ﴾
Guard strictly (five obligatory) As-Salawat (the prayers) especially the Middle Salah. And stand before Allah with obedience.

and are we guarding our solat? praying on time? and in Surah Al-Hadeed:16,

Has not the time yet come for the believers that their hearts should be humble for the remembrance of Allah And that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture before, and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened And many of them were rebellious.

Isnt the time now for us to have serious in our prayer, just remember that the first question that a believer will be questioned on the Day of the Reckoning, is about the Prayer. It is enough for me to put this last hadith and May Allah help us in having khusyu' in PRAYER.

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “The first of one's works that he shall be called to account for on the Day of Judgment is the Prayer. If he performed it well, he will be prosperous. Otherwise, he will be loser.” [Reported by At- Tirmidhi who said it is authentic hadith but singular]

Wallahu Ta'ala A'lam,
P/S: Other steps will be introduced in the next post, Insya Allah.

  1. Assalamualaikum akhi,

BarakAllah feek. I pray that Allah SWT will grant us, you and me peace and tranquility while we are facing Him every single day, five times a day. Really beneficial article. JazakAllah khair.

Just want to share something with you, something that my Syeikh told me recently.

There are two keys to gain khushu' in Salah, only two key, insyaAllah.

    1. Slow
    2. Understand

Pray slowly, take your times, and just pray slowly. First of all, make sure that one performs his/her wudhu' properly (at home). Go to masjid early and walk slowly. Performing supererogatory does help one to calm and be ready to perform the obligatory prayer.

Exactly as what have be written, one can only gain khushu' if his/her understands the recitation in Salah.

Looking forward to your next article, Abu Abdullah.

  2. Waalaikum salam warahmatullah Akhi Abdullah,

    Feeka Barakallah! Ameen!
